“And true, sometimes it seems that anger alone keeps me alive; it burns with a bright and undiminished flame. Yet anger, like guilt, is an incomplete form of human knowledge. More useful than hatred, but still limited. Anger is useful to help clarify our differences, but in the long run, strength that is bred by anger alone is a blind force which cannot create the future. It can only demolish the past. Such strength does not focus on what lies ahead, but upon what lies behind, upon what created it – hatred. And hatred is a deathwish for the hated, not a lifewish for anything else.” — Audre Lorde, Eye to Eye: Black Women, Hatred, and Anger

“Not a happy ending, but what a match! What a show! I am very proud of the boys. We will welcome them as the true heroes they are,” the former First Lady said in post match comments. Mrs. Rawlings said though the loss was a painful one for the millions of fans across the globe the Stars can walk with their shoulders high because they made history by the quality of football they exhibited throughout the tournament and the sense of perseverance, patriotism and dedication to duty they applied to the game.” —

“It always seems the stars that burn the brightest are the ones to flame out the fastest. So it was as unsurprising as it was sad when the news broke early Tuesday that Chatroulette’s cultural relevance had expired overnight. Cause of death: penises.” —

“The changes we want to see won’t happen in 18 months, or in two years, or four, or probably even eight. Indeed, the entire Obama era, if it lasts eight years, is best thought of not as a culmination, or a self-contained time frame that should be judged a failure if X, Y, and Z don’t happen. It’s the start of a process that may take 16 years, or 24; that may be along the way interrupted or undone; that will be fought tooth and nail, as we’ve plainly seen these recent months, by others whose idea of America is incomprehensible to us but who are citizens too, with the same rights we have. They (and by the way: no despair on their side! There is rage, to be sure, but judging from the Tea Party events I’ve been to and watched, it is a joyful rage) and the corporate interests and the elected representatives on their side have a lot of power. Liberal despair only reinforces their power and helps to ensure that whatever gains are made during the Obama term could quickly be rolled back. And if that happens, we are back, ten years from now, to fighting the usual rearguard battles. With this in mind, some perspective is in order.” —

Michael Tomasky for Democracy: A Journal of Ideas

Excellent essay by Michael Tomasky, well worth reading despite its length.

Idaho GOP: Can We Secede? -

If you liked the Texas GOP’s platform, you’ll love the Idaho GOP’s. Planks: Idaho should withhold taxes from the federal government, take away people’s right to vote for senators and nullify all federal laws Idahoans don’t like. Oh, and marriage should not only be limited to a union between a man and a woman, but also to a union between a “naturally born man” and “naturally born woman.”

I would be content to say that the GOP is simply losing its collective marbles, but honestly, this shit is starting to scare me.

“Justice Marshall, former Solicitor General of the United States, the man who successfully argued Brown v. Board of Education, and the first African American to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, was a giant of 20th century jurisprudence and an American hero. In person, his presence was formidable. At oral argument, I once saw him reduce the Attorney General of Missouri to a puddle on the courtroom floor — with just two words. The Attorney General had asserted some conclusion about his case, and Marshall asked the man for facts to back up his assertion. The Attorney General said, “I don’t have that information.” Marshall paused, leaned forward, and thundered, “Why not?” Good God, it terrified me, and I was sitting in the back of the visitors’ gallery.” — Lying for a Living

“Turn on the television. We have a wedding channel on cable TV devoted to the behavior of people on the way to the altar. They spend billions of dollars, behave in the most appalling way, all in an effort to be princess for a day. You don’t have cable television? Put on network TV. We’re giving away husbands on a game show. You can watch The Bachelor, where thirty desperate women will compete to marry a 40-year-old man who has never been able to maintain a decent relationship in his life. That’s what we’ve done to marriage in America, where young women are socialized from the time they’re five years old to think of being nothing but a bride. They plan every day what they’ll wear, how they’ll look, the invitations, the whole bit, they don’t spend five minutes thinking about what it means to be a wife. People stand up there before god and man even in Senator Diaz’s church, they swear to love honor and obey, they don’t mean a word of it. So if there’s anything wrong with the sanctity of marriage in America, it comes from those of us who have the privilege and the right and have abused it for decades.” — Diane Savino, NY State Senator (via gayformarriage) (via ruthannsimages) (via mutatio) (via waifsworld)
