NOW-New York State Press Release →

The above press release from NOW New York, which constitutes nothing so much as a foot-stomping fit denouncing Ted Kennedy for endorsing Obama over Hillary Clinton, is depressing as hell for anyone who calls herself a feminist. Excerpt: “Women have forgiven Kennedy, stuck up for him, stood by him, hushed the fact that he was late in his support of Title IX, the ERA, and the Family and Medical Leave Act to name a few … And now the greatest betrayal! We are repaid with his abandonment! He’s picked the new guy over us.” In other words, by endorsing Obama over Clinton, Kennedy has “betrayed” all women. Yes, that’s right, folks — people shouldn’t be judged on their sex alone, except, of course, when NOW New York says they should. If I weren’t reading this with my own eyes, I probably wouldn’t have believed it — they sound like junior high school kids who just lost the election for 7th Grade Class President.

And they wonder why more young women don’t want to call themselves feminists? I do call myself one, and even I don’t want to be associated with petulant, simplistic nonsense like this.
