Anti-climate-denialist iPhone app. →

wearedevo:

Climate denial (denial that the climate is changing, or that human activity is responsible in large part for these changes) seems to be gaining ground in the public consciousness lately. Climate denial is as scientifically invalid and baseless as it ever was, but the public experience actual science at a considerable remove. They receive science through the filter of the mass media, which is naturally more interested in producing stories than hard fact, and a controversy makes a better story than a (often depressing) scientific truth.

People are genuinely and understandably confused about the issue. If you’ve got a clueless or misinformed friend or family member who has read an Andrew Bolt column or something and starts peddling the creepy denialist line, this app, produced by Skeptical Science, might help you SCIENCE them right up in their face. It provides the most common “climate skeptic”* arguments or claims, along with the hard scientific facts that demolish them. It’s simple and uses plain language, which can help if you’re not familiar with the science yourself, or you need to explain it to someone who may not quite be willing to sit down and read the entire IPCC Fourth Assessment Report.

As for the hardcore climate-denial flat earthers, there may not be much hope. Perhaps someone will produce a pop-up book.

By the way, I’d appreciate at least a bajillion reblogs of this, right now, thx.

* I use the term skeptic loosely here, as climate denialists are not actually skeptics. Genuine skeptics require evidence before they form their views, whereas denialists form their views and selectively ignore evidence to suit. A true skeptical approach is always valuable. Again, these people are not true skeptics.

Happy to oblige!
