The former, absolutely. “Sad and pathetic” is finding my own company so boring and unworthy that I can’t go out and do something I want to do unless I have someone to distract me from the fact that I find my own company boring and unworthy.

And the question is a bit odd, if you think about it: there’s really no intrinsic quality of a movie (or a play or a concert) dictating that it absolutely has to be seen in groups of two or more. It’s yet another example of the tyranny of the extraverts: if you like to be alone, you must be weird, or sad, or pathetic. Fuck. That. Shit.
