nevver: It is Embarassing to Be Caught and Killed for Stupid Reasons / Stupefaction

The original weblog posts says, “For some reason, oddball poets had free rein over the 42nd marquees back in the day.” The “oddball poet” here is Jenny Holzer, whose truisms have been seen in many a public space and art gallery for decades. I’m kind of surprised this photo got passed around here and no one recognized her work.

That’s what I get for not reading the original weblog post, I guess. Because not only did I recognize her work, but I’m old enough to remember this installation from when it was up on 42d Street in 1985. I used to walk past it every day, in fact, on my way to my summer job at the ACLU, which was then on 43rd between 6th and Broadway.
And now I think I’ve just revealed myself to be the oldest person on Tumblr, but oh well.
